The Story of BERF WOOL — An Evening in the Taurus Mountains

On a summer evening, sitting on one of the highlands behind Mersin in the Taurus Mountains, an elderly wool craftsman told us: "In the old days, every home had a quilt chest downstairs. The quilt inside would be slept under by three generations of the family. Now nobody makes chests anymore."

That sentence planted the seed of BERF WOOL.

A Dying Craft

The number of traditional wool quilt masters in Turkey decreases with each passing decade. As synthetically filled, factory-made products take over the market, a centuries-old craft is slowly disappearing — along with the knowledge of wool shearing, washing, carding, and tying passed down through generations.

Finding the Right Wool

Not all wool is equal. Sheep raised at high altitudes in stress-free environments produce longer, more elastic fiber. We chose the Taurus highlands because sheep here continue the tradition of seasonal migration — descending to lowlands in winter, ascending to highlands in spring. This mobile life makes sheep healthier and produces higher quality wool.

Why BERF?

BERF draws inspiration from an ancient Anatolian word that describes something belonging to earth, water, and air. For us, BERF represents the essence of wool quilt production: the nourishment given by the earth, the water from the highland, the wool dried by the sun, and every knot tied by the craftsman's hand.

That is why every BERF product is not just a sleep product. It is the crystallization of a tradition that has continued for generations, the richness of Anatolia, and the knowledge a craftsman has learned over a lifetime.
