Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about wool, chemicals, allergies and care.

Wool Source

BERF WOOL's wool is sourced from local shepherds who have maintained centuries-old traditions in the Taurus Mountains. Our sheep graze freely on the high plateaus of Anatolia and are hand-sheared at the end of spring.

All our suppliers comply with animal welfare protocols and mulesing is never practiced. A traceability system tracks the wool source for every production batch.

Every batch of wool is tested before production for fine fiber diameter, moisture content, and purity. Only fine fleece wool of 26–28 microns is used; this value directly determines the softness and durability of the product.

Independent audits are also conducted during the production process. A certificate card with wool source and production information is included with every product.

Yes. All our suppliers are required to meet animal welfare standards. Mulesing (cutting skin from sheep) is strictly prohibited. Sheep live freely under natural feeding conditions.

The shearing process is done using traditional hand-shearing methods that cause the least stress to the animals. Farm audits are conducted twice a year and reports are shared upon request.

Chemicals

No chemical dyes, bleach, formaldehyde, moth-repellent coating (permethrin), or antistatic coating is used in our wool processing.

Our cover fabrics are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, meaning they have been tested for over 100 harmful substances. The result: our products are safe even for babies.

No. All our products are produced in the natural cream/beige tone of wool. No dyes are used at all. Cover fabrics are produced from natural cotton or linen blend, undyed.

This choice is both environmentally and health-conscious. The dyeing process requires large amounts of water and chemicals; we do not use this process in any of our products.

Absolutely not. We do not use synthetic insecticides such as permethrin. The natural lanolin in wool is a deterrent to moth larvae. With proper storage (in an airy, dark place or cotton bag) it remains moth-protected for years.

For long-term storage, we recommend using lavender sachets or cedar wood blocks — completely natural and effective.

Only water and natural soap (lanolin-based) are used to clean the wool. The carding process is mechanical and requires no chemicals. The threads used in stitching are also made from natural cotton.

Simply: water, soap, hand labor. That's all.

Allergy

Most "wool allergies" are actually reactions to the chemicals on the wool, not to the wool itself. Since BERF products contain no chemicals, these types of sensitivities usually do not cause problems.

True wool (lanolin) allergy is quite rare. If you have not had problems with unprocessed wool before, you can comfortably use BERF products. We recommend testing a small piece first to be sure.

If you suspect an allergy or have previously had a reaction, we advise consulting your doctor.

Yes, wool creates an environment that is not ideal for house dust mites. Mites prefer humid, warm conditions; wool's natural moisture management eliminates the microclimates that enable these conditions.

In independent tests conducted by Australian Wool Innovation, people using wool quilts were found to have 50% fewer mites in their beds compared to synthetic alternatives.

Additionally, washing wool at 60°C or leaving it in sunlight kills mites.

Generally yes. Since wool contains lanolin, a natural antibacterial, it prevents mold formation; since it does not harbor mites, it reduces allergens. This dual effect significantly reduces asthma and rhinitis triggers.

However, every individual's situation is different. We recommend that people with respiratory conditions try it for a few nights first and consult their doctor as needed.

Care & Warranty

Wool quilts require much less washing than you might think — thanks to wool's self-cleaning properties, 1–2 washes per year is usually sufficient.

Machine washing:

  • Select gentle/wool program (30°C, low spin)
  • Use specialist wool detergent (pH neutral, fragrance-free)
  • Keep spin speed below 400 rpm
  • Double rinse

Hand washing (preferred):

  • In 30°C lukewarm water, with slow movements
  • Do not rub; submerge and lift
  • Dry wrapped in a towel, not wrung out

Drying: Lay flat in the shade on a wide surface. Brief exposure to sunlight kills mites, but prolonged UV damages the fiber.

All BERF WOOL products are covered by a 2-year material and workmanship warranty. During this period, problems due to seam opening, uneven filling distribution, or manufacturing defects are resolved free of charge.

Items not covered by warranty:

  • Improper washing (e.g. washing at 60°C, using bleach)
  • Use of high-temperature dryer
  • Physical damage (cuts, burns)
  • Pet damage
  • Normal wear and fading (color or odor changes over time are normal)
